DVD Review - The Masked Saint

The official introduction:

Inspired by true events, The Masked Saint is based on the highly popular book of the same name. Former professional wrestler Chris Samuels has recently retired from the ring to start a new life with his family as a small town pastor. When he witnesses rampant problems in the community, he decides to moonlight as a masked vigilante fighting the injustice. While facing troubles at home and at church, he must evade the police and somehow reconcile his secret and violent identity with his calling as a pastor.

The cast:

Starring: Brett Granstaff (Vice), Lara Jean Chorostecki (Hannibal), Oscar nominee Diahann Carroll (Grey’s Anatomy), James Preston Rogers (Pixels) and the late WWE Hall of Famer ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper in his last confirmed film.

The award:

Winner of Best Picture at the 2015 International Christian Film Festival

Our comments:

When a film is badged “Christian” it normally means extra grace is required, but this is not the case for The Masked Saint. The first noticeable impression was the cast profiles and then getting Roddy Piper on the team for a seal of WWE approval. After setting the childhood background, it was straight onto the canvas and some impressive ring action, which equipped him well for church leadership.

The story is packed with great characters, from the striving to be good, to the destructively bad and a good dose of the unpredictables in between. Very much a rollercoaster of moral mazes and rugs that get pulled from under some resolved situations. The action is well paced and the dilemmas seem to grow as fast as the hole that is dug by the double life led.

Knowing it is inspired by a true story keeps some normality and also a reality to the challenges faced by a husband, pastor and hero. The grittiness creates a good tension, as the plot switches faster than a tag team and Chris Samuels has some impressive moves on his troublesome congregation members that pastors could only dream of fulfilling.

Overall, this is a complete package to entertain, challenge, inspire, and for all the wrestling fans it has enough action to have you rattling the nearest cage.
